ERD receives coveted 4-star rating from Charity Navigator
[ERD] Episcopal Relief & Development (ERD) announced August 11 that it has
achieved a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator for sound fiscal management.
This is the highest possible rating, given to only a quarter of the
charities evaluated by the group, the national leader in charity evaluation.
This 'exceptional' designation indicates that ERD executes its mission in a
financially responsible way.
"Episcopal Relief & Development is committed to maintaining the highest
standards of accountability so we are extremely pleased to be recognized by
Charity Navigator for excelling at this," says Robert W. Radtke, president
of ERD. "By effectively administering the financial support of our donors we
can truly heal a hurting world."
The recognition from Charity Navigator coincides with ERD's launch of their
2007 Annual Summary, highlighting the efforts of the agency to reach close
to 2.5 million people in more than 41 countries around the world this past
year. ERD's profile on Charity Navigator is available here
(http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=10634).
A copy of the 2007 Annual Summary can be downloaded from Episcopal Relief &
Development's website (http://www.er-d.org/Financials).

PEOPLE
Alison Feigh's new books aim at protecting children
By Joe Bjordal
[Episcopal News Service] Alison Feigh's childhood was significantly
influenced by one tragic event. On October 22, 1989 her friend and
classmate, Jacob Wetterling, was abducted at gunpoint on a rural road near
St. Joseph, Minnesota, and never seen again. That loss would also influence
her college education and professional career.
At St. Olaf College, she designed her own degree, which focused on missing
and exploited children. Her first professional job was at the National
Center for Missing and Exploited Children. In 2001 Feigh came "full circle"
when she joined the staff of the Jacob Wetterling Foundation in St. Paul as
a child safety specialist. She has become a nationally-known and
sought-after expert on the topic of child and teen safety and has appeared
on CNN, Fox News and many local television stations.
As a result of providing education to parents and children alike, it became
obvious to Feigh that some issues were not being addressed early enough and
that parents lacked resources to talk to their children about safety issues.
She has helped to remedy that situation as the author of two children's
books, I Can Play it Safe and On Those Runaway Days, both published last
spring by Free Spirit Press.

EDUCATION
Episcopal Divinity School to hold fall Lambeth Conference panel discussion
[Episcopal News Service] The Rev. Dr. Ian Douglas, Episcopal Divinity School
(EDS) faculty and member of the Design Group for the 2008 Lambeth
Conference, will facilitate a panel discussion on the Lambeth Conference on
September 25, from 6-8 p.m., at the Cambridge, Massachusetts seminary.
The intent of the Lambeth Conference, held in Canterbury, England July
16-August 3, was for bishops to become more confident in their Anglican
identity, to deepen their awareness of how bishops are responsible to and
for each other; and to grow in energy and enthusiasms for their task of
leading the work of mission in the Churches of the Anglican Communion.
All are welcome to join Douglas as he and the panel members answer questions
evoked by the events at Lambeth: What was the tone, and what does it mean
for the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion? What does it mean to be
an Anglican today, and what is our covenant with each other and with the
wider church?

'Coming full circle'
Three generations of clergywomen serve at Massachusetts parish altar
By Claire Cox
[Episcopal Life] Three generations of ordained women recently stood together
at the altar of St. Stephen's Parish in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, in a
Eucharist celebrating the Rev. Gwen Sears' 80th birthday and her 50 years of
service to the church.
Joining Sears, a deacon since 1982, were the Rev. Hannah Anderson, 53, St.
Stephen's rector, and the Rev. Jenny Gregg, 30, newly ordained as a priest.
"I am pleased that there are three women [at the altar]," Sears said. "Three
generations is probably unique in a way, from youth to middle age to the
old. We are in a church that struggled with women's ordination at first. A
group of pioneers went ahead with what they called irregular ordination.
They broke down the doors and made it possible for future comers to
proceed."

"On Being a Christian, 2008 edition" from the Continuum International
Publishing Group, by Hans Küng, 720 pages, paperback, c. 2008, $29.95
[The Continuum International Publishing Group] On Being a Christian is a
vital and important statement about what it means to be a Christian. Hans
Küng has himself said of the book, which he regards as his magnum opus, that
it intends to "clarify and challenge Christian faith and life at a time when
the churches have unfortunately lost rather than gained in credibility. It
seeks to bring to light for this present time the original Christian message
and particularly the figure of Jesus of Nazareth." The book continues to
offer a strong message to today's Christians. As Küng says in the closing of
the book, "By following Jesus Christ, people in the world today can live,
act, suffer and die in a truly human way; in happiness and unhappiness, life
and death, sustained by God and helpful to fellow men and women."
